Dental Crowns An Overview
A dental crown, also called a tooth cap or tooth crown, is used to restore cracked teeth, crooked teeth, and teeth that have been compromised by cavities. Dental crowns are also used in the dental bridge procedure. The dental bridge will be connected to two dental crowns, which cover the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. The dental crown covers the entire tooth, like a cap, and is permanently cemented into place.
Whether you need to replace an existing cap or have a tooth that needs a crown, Roslyn, NY dentist Dr. Sal Lotardo can create a custom dental crown that looks and feels like a natural tooth. Dr. Lotardo will recommend the most appropriate type of dental crown for your dental health and cosmetic needs. In most cases, a porcelain or ceramic crown is suggested for a durable, aesthetic result. Dental crowns can be color matched to blend seamlessly with your smile for beautiful results. Reasons a person might need a dental crown include:
- After root canal therapy
- To protect a tooth with a large tooth cavity
- To repair a broken tooth or cracked tooth
- To improve the appearance of a crooked tooth or misshaped tooth
- To cover a stained tooth or discolored teeth that won’t respond to professional teeth whitening
- To close gaps between teeth
- To lengthen teeth or improve a “gummy smile”
- Other cosmetic dentistry goals

Dental Crowns What to Expect
Dr. Lotardo will recommend a dental crown when necessary to restore your dental health or address a cosmetic concern. The dental crown process involves a couple of visits to our Roslyn dentist office location.
Initial Visit – Dr. Lotardo will conduct a thorough examination of your overall dental health. Using diagnostic x-rays, molds and impressions, he will look for signs of decay, stress and instability that could compromise your results. This exam will help us to design a personalized treatment plan that will restore the tooth to optimal health and function. Your Roslyn, NY dentist will discuss the various options you have for a dental crown and help you make the best choice.
Tooth Preparation – Once the treatment plan is finalized, Dr. Lotardo will prepare the tooth/teeth by removing a small amount of the natural tooth structure to accommodate the dental crown. A temporary tooth cap will be placed on the tooth while the final restoration is being fabricated at the dental laboratory.
Final Restoration – In about 2 to 3 weeks, you will return to our Roslyn, NY cosmetic dentistry office for the delivery appointment. Dr. Lotardo will attach the dental crown, make any necessary adjustments and secure it for a permanent fit.
