Dental Crowns What to Expect
Dr. Lotardo will recommend a dental crown when necessary to restore your dental health or address a cosmetic concern. The dental crown process involves a couple of visits to either our Riverhead or Roslyn dentist office locations.
The first visit will be for preparing the affected tooth and taking dental impressions to be used in fabricating your new, custom dental crown. A temporary crown may be placed as needed for normal function while a dental lab is making your final restoration. At the second visit, Dr. Lotardo will permanently secure your new dental crown, making any adjustments needed for a comfortable fit. The new crown will be polished for a smooth surface and natural luster, complementing or enhancing your natural smile.
Implant Supported Crown
Dr. Lotardo can use a dental crown that is secured to a dental implant to replace a single missing tooth. This is an option for patients who are missing a tooth and want a more permanent replacement option. The traditional method to replace a tooth is with a dental bridge. Dr. Lotardo would have to degrade two healthy adjacent teeth to accommodate the bridge. By utilizing an implant to secure the crown, there is no need to harm healthy teeth. An implant is a titanium metal screw that will be surgically placed in the jaw bone. This will create a firm base for the crown and will actually replace the missing tooth root, stimulating healthy bone cell growth. This will prevent bone loss in the jaw.
The surgical implantation of the metal post will take place in the comforts of our Riverhead dentist office. This will require about three to six months of healing time allowing the post to fuse with the surrounding jaw bone. A small piece called an abutment will then be placed on top of the implant. The final piece is the custom dental crown that will replace the missing tooth. The crown is a life like dental restoration that will be custom matched to your natural teeth.
